About 10 years ago, I was travelling by rail back to Glasgow (where I was staying) from Edinburgh after visiting a friend. As my friend is Scottish, we had spent a good part of the day in the pub!!! I was meant to travel in Economy class but because of my alcohol-induced courage, I decided to be mischievous and I snuck into Business class. A little while into the journey, we noticed a familiar face walk past to go to the toilet. It was one of the players from the Newcastle United soccer team. Curious, I walked up to the next carriage and much to my surprise, the whole of the Newcastle United team were on board. Alan Shearer was captain of the team at the time and I thought he was a real spunk. I plonked myself down along side him and struck up a conversation. He was there drinking wine with John Barnes and they offered me a glass. I couldn't say no. The team were on their way to watch a Glasgow Rangers and Celtic match. After a little while, I decided I had better leave them alone and went back to my carriage. I was lucky not to get caught out by the conductor because when he came around to check tickets, I was sitting with Alan Shearer. The conductor seemed a little intimidated and didn't bother checking my ticket. That day was lots of fun and one I will never forget. I even have the photos to prove it.

The unexpected can be the most memborable. Our rail journey was cancelled and that meant catching the next train. We soon found out why it was cancelled and the reason for the delay. Rule is DON"T TRAVEL ON A WEEKEND because that is when rail repairs take place. We exchanged train for bus then bus for train on the border. We experienced a coal train in front of us that sopped and started as it ran out of steam.. We had the most wonderful US Grandma and grand daughter in front of us who lamented that 'we are on the train to nowhere' and after stopping every 20 mins for 20 mins we could not help but agree. Howwever, we visited the countryside of York and many wonderful little villages lined the way to our destination. Funny but will forever be in our memories.
