While bulls may give it the thumbs down the rest of the world gives this classic country a big two thumbs up. It's a country like no other both in its look and its attitude. Lunch is not a lunch without a little sangria and an afternoon is not an afternoon without a little siesta. Once up again, you can discover some of the world's most daring architecture, spit-and-sawdust bars, narrow twisting alleyways and some of the wildest nightlife on the planet. Travel is easy, accommodation plentiful, the climate good, the people fun and the beaches long and sandy.

Definitely do not Siesta through:

• The Picasso Museum and the Salvador Dali Gallery in Barcelona
• The beautiful Islamic palace of Alcazar in Seville
• And, during summer, the ongoing festivities including the San Juan festival
