Poland

Smack bang in the middle of Europe, Poland has a personality all of its own. Horse-drawn carts still negotiate country lanes as they have done so for centuries while young city-slickers explore new ways in Warsaw. It's a reasonably cheap country to travel in, it's safe and the people are very hospitable. Poland continues to evolve into a modern, vibrant and progressive state based on centuries-old traditions but if you want to get a feel for the old ways don't leave your visit too long.

Whatever you do, don't miss:

  • A day trip from Krakow to the Nazi concentration camps of Dachau and Auschwitz. It's an experience you'll never forget
  • Cheer yourself up by trawling through the colourful Main Square and the laneways of old Warsaw
  • Visit the Solidarnosc museum in Gdansk and learn how union members helped play their part in ending World War II
  • Eating Polish dumplings in, you guessed it, a traditional dumpling house
