What is a Canrail Pass?

The Canrail Pass gives you unlimited travel on VIA Rail trains throughout Canada. It's the perfect choice for people who want to go a long way on a limited budget.


What are the child/students/senior ages?

Children: 2-11 years inclusive

Students: 12-17 years inclusive

Youths: 18 - 25 years

Seniors: 60+ years of age

Can I reserve seats in conjunction with my Canrail Pass?

A ticket/reservation must be obtained for each journey. There is a 3 day minimum purchase restriction. The reservation can be purchased through Rail Plus or locally but it must be purchased minimum 3 days prior the train travel date. Reservations are available for economy class only.

Does it cost extra for me to reserve a train?

Seat reservations are free of charge on either the Canrail Pass or Corridor Pass. These seats are in economy only. Upgrades are not available on the Passes.

What counts as a one trip?

A trip is defined as a continuous journey between two stations regardless of the duration of the trip.In most cases, one free stopover is allowed per one-way trip. For example, a trip from Toronto to Vancouver with a stopover at Jasper would count as one trip used. One complimentary stopover is allowed on each trip. In the case of multiple stopovers, the stopover of longest duration will be considered to be the complimentary stopover.

What happens if I start travelling in Low Season, but overlap into High Season?

If you travel anytime into the High Season, you will need to purchase a High Season Pass.

Alternatively, depending on how much travel will take place in the High Season, you could purchase a Low Season pass, then just separate tickets for the trips required in the High Season.


How much luggage can I carry on board?

Most long distance trains have a baggage carriage where you can store up to 6 pieces of luggages. Trains in southern Quebec and southern Ontario normally have no baggage car, therefore a limit of 2 pieces of luggage per person is imposed. Large or heavy (23kgs+) items must be checked in and charges apply.


Is smoking permitted on VIA Rail services?

All VIA Rail services are non-smoking. On longer journeys passengers have the opportunity to alight at various stations where smoking is permitted.

Is travel on the Rocky Mountaineer included on my Canrail Pass?

No. The Rocky Mountaineer is not included in your Canrail Pass, however it is still possible to travel through the Rockies on 'The Canadian' train which is included on the Canrail Pass.
